Small cow-wheat (Melampyrum sylvaticum) is a rare, scrambling summer annual in the snapdragon family found in humid, upland woodlands across northern Britain and Europe. This hemi-parasitic plant steals nutrients from nearby roots and has several fascinating evolutionary and ecological quirks, including a highly mysterious relationship with pollinators.

The Pollination Mystery: Despite having flowers structured perfectly for insect pollination, small cow-wheat is a self-pollinating species. In fact, botanists have noted that there are almost no recorded observations of insects actually visiting the flowers.
A Change of Colour : Once the flowers are fertilized, the bright yellow petals often fade and turn a distinctive brick-red or orange. Scientists believe this acts as a visual signal to passing insects, essentially telling them the flowers have already been pollinated and aren't worth visiting.
Nutritional Vampirism: Small cow-wheat is a hemi-parasite, which means it can photosynthesize on its own but also relies on tapping into the roots of surrounding plants (like birch and blaeberry) to steal water and vital nutrients.
Sweet-Loving Seed Dispersal: The plant produces large seeds with a small, sweet-tasting, fleshy attachment called an elaiosome. These elaiosomes are highly attractive to ants, which will carry the seeds back to their nests, consume the sweet attachment, and discard the seed, helping to safely disperse the plant. This dispersal by ants is called Myrmecochory.
