Keratin is the other great structural material of the living world — and where chitin belongs to fungi, insects and small creatures without backbones, keratin is the exclusive building block of animals with backbones: mammals and birds. It is a tough, fibrous protein — strong, flexible, water‑repellent, resistant to wear and decay — and it forms everything from soft insulation to hard armour, sharp tools and weather‑proof covering. It is chemically quite different from chitin: chitin is a sugar‑based chain; keratin is a chain of amino acids — a protein — and it owes its legendary toughness to strong cross‑links between its strands, including sulphur bonds, which is why burning hair or feathers gives that distinctive sharp smell.
Every part of a bird that projects from the skin, or forms hard outer structures, is pure keratin.
• Feathers — the most famous form: from the soft down that keeps a Golden Eagle chick warm, to the sleek flight feathers that carry Peregrines at 200 mph, to the waterproof plumage of a Heron or Mallard — every barbs, every filament, every hollow shaft is keratin. Light, strong, elastic, and perfectly arranged — it is nature’s finest engineering material.
• Beaks and bills — the tough, curved, cutting or probing tool at the front of every bird: the heavy hooked beak of a Raven, the sharp dagger of a Heron, the stout seed‑cracker of a Bullfinch, the slender probe of a Snipe — all solid keratin, growing continuously from the base to wear away as it is used, always staying sharp.
• Talons, claws and nails — the piercing, gripping points: the curved daggers of an Owl or Peregrine, the strong claws of a Blackbird or Woodpecker, the sharp nails of a Dipper — thick, hard, pointed keratin, often reinforced at the tip.
• Scales and legs — the dry, hard, patterned skin covering bird legs and feet — like the yellow scales on a Buzzard or the rough skin on a Heron’s long legs — is keratin, just like the scales of a reptile.
• Spurs — the sharp spikes on the legs of a Red Grouse or Pheasant — solid keratin.
Every outer covering and hard growth on a mammal is keratin.
• Hair, fur and wool — from the thick winter coat of a Red Deer, the shaggy fleece of a Mountain Hare, the sleek fur of a Pine Marten or Otter, to the fine coat of a Shrew — each single hair is a hollow filament of keratin, built to trap air, shed water and hold warmth. In our cold upland climate, this is the single most important adaptation that lets mammals survive here.
• Nails, claws and hooves — the sharp curved claws of a Wildcat or Fox, the strong nails of a Badger, the massive hard hooves of Red Deer or cattle — all are compressed, layered keratin, growing constantly from the root, wearing down and renewing itself — the perfect tough tool for running, digging, climbing or defence.
• Horns and antlers — with a distinction: Horns — as in Sheep, Goat or Cattle — have a bony core covered by a permanent, tough sheath of pure keratin, growing year‑round. Antlers — as in Red Deer — are bone, not keratin, but the soft velvet that covers them while growing is skin and hair (keratin), and when shed, the hard burrs at the base are also keratin‑covered.
• Whiskers — the long sensitive bristles on Otter, Badger, Pine Marten or Roe Deer — are just thick, stiff hairs: keratin, packed with nerve endings at the base, acting as touch‑sensors.
• Skin surface and ridges — the outer dead layer of skin, and the patterns on pads and noses — all keratin.
• ✅ KERATIN → ONLY mammals and birds — beaks, talons, feathers, fur, hair, claws, hooves, horns, nails, whiskers, scales on legs
• ✅ CHITIN → EVERYTHING ELSE — insects, spiders, crustaceans, snail radula, fungi
• ❌ NEITHER → bone, cartilage, shell (mostly calcium), wood, plant fibre — these are other materials entirely
Keratin is the material that lets warm‑blooded life thrive here. In our cold, wet, windy hills, keratin is the weatherproofing, the armour, the tool‑kit and the insulation. It is the thick fur that keeps Red Deer and Mountain Hare alive through snow and ice; the waterproof feathers that let Dippers dive into freezing burns and Herons stand motionless in cold water; the sharp beaks and talons that let eagles and owls hunt successfully; the tough hooves that carry animals over rock, bog and moor.
And just like chitin, keratin is part of the great cycle of life — though it breaks down much more slowly. It is very resistant to decay, so when feathers, fur, claws or hooves are shed or left behind, they persist in the environment, gradually broken down by specialist fungi and bacteria that produce enzymes capable of unwinding its tight protein coils. As it decomposes, it releases nitrogen, sulphur and carbon — valuable nutrients in our thin, nutrient‑poor soils. You will often find piles of old feathers under roosts, shed fur along tracks, or old antler velvet and hooves deep in moss — all slowly turning back into food for the earth.
Chitin = the skeleton of the small, cold, spineless world — fungi, insects, spiders, snails, shrimps.
Keratin = the armour and clothing of the warm‑blooded world — birds and mammals.
Together they are the two great structural chemicals that build almost every living thing you see in the glens, woods and moors of Highland Perthshire — one weaving the hidden life of the soil and leaf‑litter, the other clothing and equipping the animals that move across the open hills. Neither is better than the other — but together they make the landscape whole.
