Phenology is the study of the timing of nature’s recurring events — when buds burst, flowers open, birds arrive, insects emerge, and leaves fall — and how these patterns respond to changing weather and climate. It is nature’s calendar, and in the Rannoch area, that calendar is particularly clear and sensitive because of the altitude, latitude, and distinctive Highland climate. Scientist know that man-made climate change is affecting both the rhythm of the seasons and which species are present in Rannoch.
Rannoch sits at roughly 300 metres above sea level, with a cool, damp climate, late springs, and early autumns. This means every seasonal event happens later than in lowland or southern Scotland — often two to four weeks behind Perth or Edinburgh. This makes it a particularly valuable place to monitor change, because its species are already living near the cooler edge of their range, so shifts in timing show up clearly.
• Spring bud burst — birch, rowan, and willow are the first to show leaves, typically late April to mid-May; pine follows later.
• Flowering times — alpine and moorland species such as heather, blaeberry, and bog asphodel have their own steady rhythm; sheltered burnsides see wood sorrel and primrose in April, while higher ground may still hold snow then.
• Insect emergence — the first bumblebees, butterflies, and the vital hatching of aquatic insects in the burns and loch, which in turn triggers the arrival of birds.
• Bird migration — when redwings and fieldfares leave in spring; when swallows, swifts, and ring ouzels return; when pink-footed geese pass over in autumn.
• Autumn changes — the first frosts, the rich gold of birch leaves turning, the ripening of rowan berries, and the first winter visitors arriving.
These events are not just pretty to watch — they are deeply connected. Run by the BTO, RSPB, and others, this tracks arrival and departure dates for migrant birds. In recent years, many spring migrants have been arriving earlier in southern and eastern Scotland, but Rannoch and the Highlands show a more complex pattern — some species are shifting their timing less, while others are arriving earlier but struggling if the local food peak has already passed.
Across Highland Perthshire, local recording groups — including the Loch Rannoch Conservation Association — are building their own phenology records, often linking them to weather station data and the eDNA monitoring already underway. This local detail is vital because national trends can hide the very real differences between sheltered glens and exposed moorland.
